The dietary supplement industry is a multi-billion dollar business that continues to grow. From protein powder, BCAAs, arginine, carnitine, fish oil, the list goes on for the number of supplements that are available. Out of all the choices, my favorite pre-workout is coffee. Here are three reasons why.

First, I know where the coffee is coming from. Either I’m making it myself or from the local coffee shop. Black coffee; no sugar, no preservatives, no crap. The way I look at it, the fewer the ingredients the better.

Secondly, I know coffee is safe. A lot of the supplements being sold aren’t FDA-approved. Thus, they don’t review the safety and effectiveness of what the product advertises. Due to this fact, supplements sounded like a placebo to me.

Try chugging 2 cups of coffee and working out.

Another component I want to stress is the amount of caffeine included in each serving. Some of these pre-workouts contain 185mg (I’ve seen 300mg), which is about 2 cups of 8-ounce coffee. And these pre-workouts are taken within 10 seconds. Try chugging 2 cups of coffee and working out.

Lastly, is the fact that I want results that last long. Ever seen what a bodybuilder takes? Pills after pills, powder after powder, the list is endless of how much they take. This isn’t the way I want to eat my way to stay healthy. Most importantly, you have to keep taking these supplements if you want to sustain results. Can I drink coffee for the rest of my life? One or two cups? Yeah, of course.

Always research what you are taking into your body. Just because you hear on the news or from a friend that the supplement they are taking helps. doesn’t guarantee anything.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s blog. Stay tuned for more next Wed. Kei
