“I hate working out.” “Ugh, I have to go to the gym.” “Why am I even doing this?” Sounds negative, right? Being a personal trainer for 12 years, I have come across many types of clients. I understand that not everybody falls in love with fitness. However, attitude has a big factor in keeping fitness a priority. In addition, let’s take a look at how bad attitude affects your fitness journey.

First, negativity is contagious. Ever been around a negative person all day at work? Well, imagine if I were to train 10 clients in a row that have bad attitude. How do I feel at the end of the day? All I would want to do is complain to my wife of how crappy my day was and how this person said this or that. I get it that we all have good and bad days, but it shouldn’t be horrible all the time. For those SNL fans, don’t be a Debbie Downer.

Fitness isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There will be days where you get depressed, sick, hurt, ache, lack motivation, but that’s all part of the journey. If it were easy, then all of us would be in shape, right? The key is whether you see value in fitness. High blood pressure runs in my family, so I know I need to continue exercising the rest of my life. Also, I look forward to exercising because it helps me relieve stress. If you don’t have one, find your “why” in fitness. Why do you exercise? This shouldn’t be vague like “I want to tone.” I can write a whole essay of why this is a bad reason. So be clear with your intention of fitness.

Lastly, work ethic and attitude go hand in hand. Those that are getting good results from a training program are usually happy and working hard. However, those that are not getting results are unhappy and not trying as much. I have seen clients get demotivated to the point where they are not putting much effort during their training session and still expect to see results. Its like expecting to get straight A’s without studying. Some people can do it, but majority of us have to study. So approach fitness as that full-time job that you want to excel in, which we will talk about in next week’s blog. Hope you enjoyed reading. Stay tuned for more next Wed……..Kei
