Personal Record. Since we just had the Winter Olympics, this word was being used a lot during competition. Personal record; you versus you.

Now, we all have different intentions when exercising. Some of us are trying to lose weight, some are trying to get stronger, and some are trying to exercise for health reasons. No matter what the reason is, it’s always nice to know how you are progressing. “Oh, I never would of thought I could do that.” I love hearing that from my clients. It shows me that I have taken them to a place they never imagined and that’s the pinnacle of personal training. Pushing people beyond what they are capable of doing. However, not everyday is going to be sunshine and rainbows.

Most importantly, there’s ups and downs in exercising. We hit plateaus, get sick, get hurt, or even worse, lose motivation. So understanding this, when you are feeling good those are days you want to push more. “I’m going to lift heavier. I’m going to go faster.” These are the days you are going to hit a personal record. So, take advantage of how you are feeling because you might not feel as good the rest of the week or the following week.

Take advantage when you feel good.

It’s a constant battle. Think of the Olympian skiers. There’s probably more times they didn’t improve than getting faster. They prepare for four years and only have one shot at gold. Fall once on figure skating and you are out of the medal race. It’s sad, but that’s just how sports goes. Luckily for us, we get more than one chance. Don’t do so well one day? No worries. Get back at it later in the week or next. You WILL have a next time. Take advantage of that.

From these Olympics, my favorite commercial was Toyota showcasing Lauren Woolstencroft, who was born without any legs. In the beginning, it shows that winning a gold medal for her was 1 in a billion. Then, as she aged those stats went lower and lower until it became 1 in 1. “Start your impossible.” If you haven’t seen it, I suggest watching it. Hope you enjoyed this week’s blog.
