Best way to……………

Fill in the blank. “Hey Kei, what is the best way to lose weight?” “Hey Kei, what is the best way to gain muscle?” “What is the best way to get a six pack?” “What is the best way to get this knee better?” These are questions I encounter on a daily basis. People want quick and fast results. That’s why there’s so many ads saying “lose 10-lbs in 2 weeks.” In a world where everything is at our fingertips, people’s expectations with results from fitness is…….how can I describe it? Disoriented.

Time. That is my answer to these questions. It doesn’t take couple of weeks to get in the habit of exercising and incorporating it into our daily lives, especially if you want it to last. I grew up playing sports and grew accustomed to exercising to help with sports performance. This habit stayed with me even after I stopped playing and now I enjoy exercising because of the way it makes me feel.

Most importantly, the “best way” approach is something that comes up when people are looking for a easy route. “There has to be a better way.” Furthermore, the thing you have to remind yourself is the consequence afterwards. Yes, you lost 10 pounds, but how are you going to keep the weight from coming back? Bad habits are still there, and it’s only a matter of time before those 10 pounds come back. That’s what people forget. We are in constant battle with each meal; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is no one-size fits all “best diet.” If there were, then obesity wouldn’t exist.

So next time you think there is a “best way” in fitness, think again. When was the last time there was a best way to learn your job or building relationships? Took trial and error, making mistakes and learning from it. Time is the only way because fitness isn’t something that should last for couple of months, should be something that we are in for the long haul.¬†Hope you liked this week’s blog.
