Just this past weekend, we had the LA marathon. 26.2 miles. The first place finisher was 2 hours and 11 minutes. This translates to about a 5 minute mile. FOR 26 miles.
Let’s analyze this 5 minute mile average. If you have ran on the treadmill, the speed you are at is 12. That’s 12.0, ladies and gentlemen. I could probably do that for 30 seconds and I will be exhausted. To get a feel for how fast 12 is, I want everybody to try it (under expert supervision that is). It is literally sprinting speed.
Imagine a pace that you are sprinting your fastest and being able to sustain that for hours. That is what these marathon runners are capable of for 26 miles. Incredible athletes. Let’s just say that these athletes finish a marathon faster than we finish a half marathon. Remember in P.E (physical education) class when you had that one kid that kept lapping you? That’s what this is, but multiplied. Just fascinating what these athletes are capable of. Hope you enjoyed this week’s blog. Stay tuned for more next Wed…………………..Kei
