This is a question I get asked all the time. “I’m gaining weight, do I need to increase my activity?” “I need to work out more, right?” Before I say yes, there’s a couple of things to address.
First, is to understand that nutrition plays more of a factor in your results. No matter how much activity you do, it won’t matter if you eat badly. Let’s say you want to increase your activity by walking 30 minutes. This is good, but doesn’t burn many calories. How easy is it to eat 200 calories? If you’re trying to undo your bad eating, then think again and prioritize eating better.
Secondly, is the expectations that come with increased activity. You’re exercising more so you should see results faster, right? Well, in theory, yes. However, if it isn’t, then frustration builds and your motivation to exercise drops. If you exercise 7 days a week and don’t see any results, wouldn’t you be frustrated? Understand that increasing activity will help with reaching your goal, but progress may take longer.
Ultimately, increasing activity will help with getting to your fitness goals, but nutrition always plays a bigger role. If people had more time to exercise, then losing weight would be easier. However, our schedule doesn’t allow us to exercise for hours. So next time you are contemplating on whether to increase your activity, take a look at your eating. Remember, you can’t outwork a poor diet. Hope you enjoyed this week’s blog. Stay tuned for more next Wed………………Kei
