Gummy bears: my childhood love

Gummy bears: orange, red, yellow, green. Shiny, sticky, and most importantly, delicious.

This was my go-to candy growing up. My mom would pack them in my brown bag. I wonder if kids even know what that is. If you grew up in the 90’s like me, we used a brown bag to take our lunch. This consisted of: Capri Sun, chips/gummy bears, apple/banana, and of course, peanut butter sandwich. Anyways, the highlight of my lunches were gummy bears. I remember I didn’t wait until lunch time to eat them. In between classes or right after I got dropped off, they were already gone. It was like crack. And that’s what candy is, very addicting.

Looking back, I didn’t know how much sugar each gummy bear contained or, quite frankly, cared. It was delicious and that’s all that mattered. I remember begging my mom to give me more each time, but she reminded me every single time that if I eat too much sugary foods, I would get a cavity and would have to go to the dentist, which I HATED. That was enough to scare me to eat them in moderation. Scare tactic 101 worked in this case I guess.

Out of curiosity, I tried them not too long ago to see if I still liked them. As my tongue made contact with that shiny, delicious orange bear (orange is the best flavor and color of course), a lot of memories came flashing in and I said, “damn, that’s good.” I could see why they are still around and making people happy. Some things never change and for a reason. I sure don’t crave it as much as before, but it’s nice to know that you can still eat the food you grew up with. Hope you liked this week’s blog, stay tuned for more next Wed………….Kei
